The prostate is a walnut-shaped gland present in reproductive system of males. Prostatic enlargement can lead to cancer of prostate and so the enlarged prostate needs to be treated using Transuretheral Resection of Prostate (TURP) surgery. Urinary problems are also caused as a result of prostate enlargement.

TURP is a surgical option only when treatment through medications have not worked out. TURP surgery is the most suitable and effective treatment method to treat the condition of enlarged prostate gland.

There are few tests that a doctor orders in order to pinpoint whether surgery is really the only option remaining. They are as follows:

  1. Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test – The prostate gland produces a protein called Prostate-specific antigen. It entails a blood test for determining prostatic enlargement. A raised PSA level confirms this prostate disorder
  2. Digital rectal examination (DRE) test - To perform this test, the doctor inserts a gloved finger into the anus. This test helps the doctor to know if there are any abnormalities such as enlarged prostate gland and also prostate cancer.
  3. Physical examination - A physical examination for determining overall health condition is also ordered.

Precautions to be followed for post-operative care after undergoing a TURP procedure:

  1. Drink fluids in plenty - Increase your fluid and water intake to avoid dehydration and subsequent effects on the body. Fluids also facilitate flushing out blood clots from bladder.
  2. Avoid driving - Avoid driving for a week post surgery.
  3. Lifting heavy objects - Avoid lifting heavy objects as that will put strain on the operated region and may cause bleeding too.
  4. Pain medication - You may be prescribed pain medication. Follow the prescription as asked by your doctor.
  5. Alert your doctor if - Fever, changes in urinary patterns, colored urine etc. should be reported to the doctor on an immediate basis.
