Knee Ligament (ACL) Surgery in Kolkata

Knee ligament surgery is carried out under general anesthesia. The procedure of ACL surgery is as follows:

• The surgeon will make small cuts around your knee for incisions of medical instruments.
• The torn ligament will be located and removed with the shaver or other surgical instrument.
• If your surgeon is using your own tissues, he will make a larger cut at the section from where he requires your auto-graft (tissues taken from your own body).
• The surgeon will make tunnels in your bone to bring this new tissue through. This new tissue will be located at your old ACL location.
• The new ligaments will be attached to your bones using medical devices to hold them in place. Along the healing process, the bone tunnel gets filled up, thus holding the new ligament in place.
• After successful fixation of the ligaments, the surgeon will close the cuts with stitches. A cotton dressing will be done to cover the wound to avoid bleeding.

You will have a swollen, painful knee for a few days post-surgery. You will need crutches for at-least 4 weeks after this surgery. Your orthopaedic can suggest you some simple knee exercise to prevent stiffness in your knee. You can resume your physical activities and sports after 4-6 months.
