An ACL tear is one of the most common knee injury. Compared to men, female athletes often experience sports injuries that can cause an ACL tear. This can be due to the difference in their physical condition, muscular strength and neuromuscular control. It can also be because of a wider pelvis, alignment of the lower leg and the anatomical differences in females.
An ACL injury differs in severity, which are categorized as follows:
- Grade I sprain: Pain with minimum damage to the ACL, but still the knee joint remains stable.
- Grade II sprain: Higher degree of damage and mild looseness of the joint, known as a partial tear.
- Grade III sprain: Completely torn ligament and a very loose or unstable joint.
Symptoms that show an ACL tear situation:
- Knee popping: People with an ACL injury may feel or hear a “popping” sound in their knee.
- Knee hyper-extension: Patients with an ACL injury may feel a brief hyper-extension in their knee joint, if the knee is bent or twisted backwards.
- Knee swelling: Within six hours of an ACL injury, a large swelling can be seen around your knee joint which increases gradually.
- Knee pain and discomfort: Patients experience tremendous pain in their knee; especially in the joint area. Most people completely stop performing any activities with their knees.
Patients with an ACL injury cannot perform a range of movements with their knees like stretching, or running. Your knee may experience a lot of pressure even while you walk, making it uncomfortable for you.
If you have undergone a knee injury, visit your orthopedist and check the status of your knee condition before it worsens.
