Kidney stones that are very minute can be passed out through urine. But, lithotripsy becomes necessary when:

• Damage - Kidney stones that are causing damage due to bleeding, urinary tract infections and pain.
• Small kidney stones - Patients that have small sized kidney stones can eliminate them through this procedure.
• Large sized stones - Patients who have really big stones are prone to have an affected urinary function and so need this procedure for removing these stones. If such stones move into ureter through kidney, severe pain is caused.
• Symptoms - Symptoms like colored urine, diarrhea, fever and vomiting are indicative of kidney stones.

Lithotripsy has few sub-types. They are as listed below:

• Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) - It is also referred to as Shock Wave Lithotripsy. High intensity sound waves passed through a lithotripter are used for breaking down stones formed in kidney. It is an outpatient procedure that does not require the patient to stay over in the hospital.
• Laser lithotripsy - In this type, laser technology is used by urologist for breaking down stones formed in kidney and ureter.
• Endoscopic Lithotripsy - Also referred to as percutaneous nephrolithotomy, this type employs usage of an endoscope for accessing stone formation and destroy them.
