Small kidney stones developed in your kidneys can pass through when you urinate. Larger and sharp kidney stones, on the other hand, are difficult to pass through.
A lithotripsy surgery is essential when people with kidney stone problem experience:
- Blood in urine
- Severe abdominal pain
- Infections in your urinary tract
- Trouble and pain while urinating
If your doctor diagnoses kidney stone problem in your body, he/she will try primary treatments to eliminate kidney stones. When these primary methods do not work, lithotripsy surgery is the optimal solution to fix kidney stone problems.
Before lithotripsy is performed, let your doctor know:
- If you are allergic to any medicines
- If you are diabetic
- If you are under any medication
- If you are pregnant
Lithotripsy surgery can be classified into sub-categories based on the methods used. These sub-categories are:
- Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) – Lithotripsy performed using shock waves.
- Laser Lithotripsy – Kidney stones are broken down using laser technologies.
- Endoscopic Lithotripsy – Lithotripsy performed using an endoscope.
Do not eat or drink anything for around six hours before the surgery. Your doctor will check your vitals before the surgery. Your eligibility for lithotripsy depends on whether your heart rate and sugar levels are normal.
Lithotripsy procedure requires about 45 minutes for execution. After the surgery, you are asked to rest for at least two hours. Your urologist will educate you on what measures you should follow for recovery. Apart from those measures, drink minimum 8 glasses of water daily. Do not forget to take your medicines on time.
