Following listed are different types of hysterectomies available:

• Partial Hysterectomy: Also known as sub-total hysterectomy, it entails removal of uterus without removing cervix. It is a very rarely performed procedure.
• Total Hysterectomy: This type entails removing uterus and cervix in totality.
• Hysterectomy and Salpingo-Oophorectomy- Fallopian tubes, ovaries and uterus are removed in this hysterectomy type.

A hysterectomy is carried out in following different ways:

• Laparoscopic Hysterectomy: A laparascope has a light and camera on either ends. Small incisions are made in your abdomen for inserting this laparoscope for examination and removing uterus.
• Abdominal Hysterectomy: As the name suggests, a large vertical or horizontal incision is made on the abdomen for removing the uterus.
• Vaginal Hysterectomy: During a vaginal hysterectomy, uterus removal takes place through incisions made in vagina. Recovery time for this type is less and so this method is advisable.

Following things should be kept in mind during recovery stage after having undergone a hysterectomy:

• Try to remain active: walking around hospital premises is encouraged as that prevents blood clots developing in legs.
• Using tampons: tampons need to be used to avoid spoiling your clothes, only if you have undergone a vaginal hysterectomy.
• Rigorous activities: avoid rigorous activities like bending down, lifting heavy objects and operating electrical appliances that require a lot of effort.
• Follow-up appointment: Make sure to get a follow-up appointment scheduled with your gynecologist 4-6 weeks post surgery.
