There are four types of ligaments present in knee joints - anterior cruciate (ACL), lateral collateral (LCL), medical collateral (MCL) and posterior cruciate (PCL) ligaments. ACL regulates forward and backward motion of knee joint and is located in the middle compartment of knee joint.

To perform knee ligament (ACL) surgery, patient is administered either general anesthesia or local anesthesia to make the part numb. Small incisions are made on the knee and ACL is accessed. The procedure makes use of grafting wherein healthy ligament from other part of body is removed and attached in place of ACL. Grafts that are used from patient's own body are called as autografts. ACL surgery takes approximately 2-3 hours and is an outpatient procedure. It can be regarded as safe surgical procedure and risks involved are minimal.

ACL surgery restores knee stability and strength. It alleviates knee pain up to certain extent and makes forward and backward motion of knee joints easy.

It takes several days for the joint to completely heal. Bed rest and not exerting any unnecessary pressure over knee joints will ensure quick recovery. Consult with your doctor if you can opt for knee massages that provide relief and lubricate knee joints. Weight lifting exercises are not allowed for initial few days post surgery.
