Purposes of a lithotripsy:
- Kidney stones - Through a lithotripsy, kidney stones that are causing bleeding, urinary tract infections, chronic pain, fever and kidney damage due to blockage formation are treated.
- Renal Stones - Stone formation in kidneys is an age-old phenomenon. Stones formed in kidney give considerable pain, damage and other infections of urinary tract. Therefore, a lithotripsy eliminates stones from the kidney to restore proper functioning of the organ.
- Ureteral Stones - Stones that occur in the ureter (the tube through which urine moves from the kidney to the urinary bladder) are treated through a lithotripsy.
- Bladder Stones - A lithotripsy procedure can remove stones that form in and around the urinary bladder.
Stones formed in various organs not only restrict proper cleansing of the body but also affects digestion. Medication is injected in certain cases. In the treatment, the body parts affected by stones are exposed to high intensity shock waves for destroying them. A tube is then passed through the bladder, for urine collection from kidney into it. This procedure type makes sure that even the smallest of stones are removed from the system.
There are few advantages that a lithotripsy procedure has:
- Passing out stones is easier: Very minute stones get converted to particles and are passed out easily through a lithotripsy.
- Same day return: The lithotripsy is an outpatient procedure which means patient can return the same day to his routine.
- Anesthesia: A lithotripsy that does not require administering anesthesia to patient.
- Relatively less painful: It is non-invasive and hence painless procedure.
- No scarring: Incisions aren't required for conducting the procedure and hence possibility of scarring is erased.
