The word 'Litho' means Stone and 'Trip' means break. Breaking a stone is called as Lithotripsy. It is a non-invasive procedure. Kidney stones can be of any size and shape. Smaller ones can pass through and easily exit your body when you urinate. But stones that are larger and sharper can cause damage. Such type of kidney stones are broken using shock waves under a lithotripsy procedure. Shock waves are produced by a sophisticated machine called Lithotriper. A high voltage electrical signal is discharged through a spark gap that efficiently focuses on the stone only. This process is localized with the help of a machine called C-Arm Image Intensifier.
